GREVYS ZEBRAS.. this most beautiful animal..

I just wanted to mention the plight of our incredibly rare and endangered  Grevy Zebras, these most majestic desert Animals, and some thoughts about what we can do.. ..  They say there are only between 2000 to 3000 left in this whole world and still they are being killed for their meat, or dying of thirst on a regular basis.. Its really sad..

They are absolutly beautiful!!

They are absolutly beautiful!!

In the area that was the Grevy Zebra’s favourite  country, the Elbarta plains, this is the closest one gets to them… It looks close but they are at least 500 meters away and poised ready to run..    This is an area that they are killed on a regular basis for their meat, by the Turkana.. We need to try to stop this, by putting more security and or drawing them away from harm..  Only 10/15 years ago one saw big herds of these Zebras now one sees maximum ten in a herd..

so few left in the world, and they are still dieing from thirst and being killed by the Turkana..

The area North of the Kirisia hills, all along the west side of  Samburu and all the way up to the lake, is like ‘no mans’ land for large parts of the year due to tribal conflict between the Samburu and Turkana,  and this is where these valuable animals are being killed by the Turkana .. We need to stop this   By the way, the Samburu do not eat any kind of Equus..

We have exciting thoughts on an area between the Ndotos and Mt Nyiru which is perfect country for the Grevy Zebras and all plains game, with great feed.. See the pictures below.. Made for Wildlife!! Watch this space for developments, to return it to what it used to be!! We need first security, then water, then lots of wildlife!   Its a paradise!

this is how we travel around here.. well armed!

Here we are on our safari to check out these areas for future wildlife safe havens..

the plains are full of Ostriches but are being killed every day for their feathers.. PLEASE NEVER BUY OSTRICH FEATHERS from local people up here..

Road to kileshwa

Road to Kileshwa.. North end of the Ndoto mountains showing.. This area was full of wildlife in earlier times, but poaching, neglect, and insecurity has rid it almost totally, except a few  remaining Grevys, Ostriches, cheetahs, jackals, common Zebra, gerenuk, greater and lesser kudu and others.. lets return it to it former self!!

Kileswa Lugga

Kileswa Lugga.. Full of good acacia trees for all herbivores to enjoy.. the seed pods being so nutritious

Also knowing that there are Grevy’s still dying because they can not get to water.. .. Up around the Ndotos and Mt Nyiru they go far into the semi desert in search of food and come in for water every 2 to 3 days.. They walk up to 40/50 kms to find water in the dry seasons, and some time their water source has been blocked off, or dried up..

this huge dam built in the colonial times needs de-silting, then it could become a valuable water point for the wildlife.. We saw Grevy tracks all round looking for water

The Milgis Trust has been making a big effort to  make all the communities aware that they need to protect this most rare animal, and make sure that they can always get to water.. ..(Of course they don’t know that they don’t exist in other parts of the world!.. ) We make a point of course when we do a VOSS water project, to make a trough especially for the grevy’s and other wildlife in all the areas that they live.. so far in Masikita, and Seren there are troughs that the Wildlife can get to at night..  There is also a beautiful place between the  Ndoto Mountains and Mt Nyiru, called Kileswa, together with VOSS foundation we intend to put a solar put into a new bore hole that the government has put in, we will have a person there who will always make sure the the trough for the Grevy’s is full!!.. Its not that far from this old dam, so there fore securing more than one water source would be a good start!

These poor 'guys' are pushed to the limit every day, lets try to give them a safer and better life??

  1. Helen, I do admire your drive and commitment to thinking of the bigger picture. You do a tremendous job – one of the people on this earth who make a REAL difference to the lives of not only people but wildlife and the environment, something about which I am passionate. I envy your life, which I know can be frustrating and difficult at times, but is SOOO worthwhile. I think of you often, out there in the beautiful mountains. Keep up the good work, and stay positive.
