WE HAVE GOOD NEWS!!!

THE rains are here!! Its UNBELIEVABLE!! This is in the desert..
The beginning!…

I know I’ve said before that the rains have come and its the end of the drought BUT I think this time its for real!!! already by the end of March its more than we’ve had for a LOOOOOONG TIME!!!

I just want you all to know that the relief is UNBELIEVABLE.. Its amazing what a drop of rain can do for the morale.. We all feel uplifted and happy...

In the Ndoto Mountains
The first day of rain!..
And finally water in the luggas.. proper water this time!
Today!!! We’ve all forgotten what water looks like!! Green trees!
Floods below Lkanto
the Parsaloi Lugga.. looking west

Looking north..

Looking South up the Laana Nikan (Seiya) lugga

The first flood down the Laana Nikan
A few days later.. Look at the difference..

Just before it rained, our Remate E Losho team embarked on a trial run to put some bunds as a ‘show case’ to the communities in the overgrazed and badly eroded area’s in Lekeri.. hopefully this maybe a way forwards to save the situation..

Lekeri

Then the rains came and nearly washed away our ReL team!!

Literally the day after the ReL team, had finished the bunds the rain came!! Their camp got flooded out..

Luggas flooded..

Lchoro
Loikumukum lugga in flood!

Funny how JUST A DROP OF RAIN can remove months, years even of stress.. Two weeks later we are all wondering what all the fuss was about!!.

WE ARE ALL SMILING!!

WILDLIFE FRIENDLY WELLS…. We are very happy and proud of the job these 70 guys have done to help the animals get to water safely.. AND with great success.

Our 35 teams digging wildlife safe water wells worked tirelessly, throughout the the last 3 years.. We have VERY FEW DISASTERS because of them.. With the luggas in flood all these wells are gone now!.. And the wildlife will wonder down to the now, rivers, to drink!

Finally, very excited to show you these images from the night camera of the elephants drinking from one of our wildlife friendly wells.. We have tried over the years but the elephants for some reason don’t like the camera and have destroyed quite a few!

The Dam unit have also been incredibly busy and now we can also ‘pat their efforts on the back’ as ALMOST ALL ARE FULL OF WATER.. Up to now Milgis has done approx 150 pan dams!..

Milgis Trust thank you very much for this dam, I’m Lengees Emerson from Uaso Rongai. That was was the dam you made for us. Please know it is working!.. the cows are getting water well from the dam.

Just a reminder below how bad it was! A few recent pictures, just before the rain came, of what we can say “good bye” to for a few years hopefully..

imagine having to live off this?!!
The giraffes in the desert were just about at the end of their tether on finding sustenance..
SOOOOOOO BEAUTIFULL
Thank goodness they are so tall! they can find something to eat from above..

BUT GOOD NEWS!! A couple of days ago this was the report from the desert!!!…

from the manager!.. Good morning team. Yesterday I spoke to our guys in the desert and they were very happy about rains. They reported good rain which is still on even yesterday. In southern end of the desert they reported very happy giraffes. One scout reported that giraffes were very playful. They saw a group of 6 with two young ones chasing one another up and down just happy and playing.

Some of the desert animals couldn’t make it..

The end for this Oryx
The elephants behind this manyatta trying to survive off dry sticks.. the elephants became completely unafraid of humans.. All they were concentrating on was to get through the drought! NOT ANY MORE THOUGH!
In the Kaisut desert.. These Sandgrouse having to fly miles and miles to find water.. looking healthy though
Dust storm, with thousands of sandgrouse looking for water.. no more
No more digging wells for elephants.. Every day it was the job of a couple of guys to make the well good again, ready for the elephants to have a party the next night..

The reason why we are digging these wells is to try to stop the elephants and all other wildlife from falling in.. Check these guys below Loikumukum.. REALLY DANGEROUS.. the well could collapse or they can fall in head first..

NO MORE for now any way!

Drinking out of a dangerous well..
No more nightmares of elephants falling into wells.. The one we really worry about is the little one behind..
One thing about elephants they are VERY VERY patient with each other.. Even if they are thirsty
HOT and DRY out in the desert.. no more
no more… this photo take in Ririma in the Rendille country..This grevy’s zebra is too thirsty to wait..
No more horizons of desolate desert.. this will all be flowers and greenery
no more looking into brown hills, dead looking trees, whirl winds bringing nothing
No more looking out at into the distance wondering WHEN IT WILL RAIN..
No more ‘invasions’ of hundreds, thousands of camels, in search of browse, and by doing so disturbing the peaceful communities, their livestock, and ‘their’ wildlife living on the big luggas,.. The Elephants and Lions especially found it difficult to contend with.

No more community meetings to find a solution so that they don’t completely inundate the system..

ALL OF US LIVING IN THE MILGIS AREAS AND OUT INTO THE DESERTS, SAY, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU TO ALL THAT HAVE HELPED THE PEOPLE, THE LIVESTOCK THE WILDLIFE SURVIVE THESE TOUGH TIMES..

WE ARE ALL DREAMING OF A FEW YEARS OF PLENTY OF MILK.. SO THAT EVERY ONE CAN BE GENEROUS AGAIN..

Finally a view of Mt Kenya from near Naro Moru.. The sun on its way north, passing the mountain.. 16th March..

A few days later!!! 20th March 2023
SNOW ON THE EQUATOR!!!
